Software Update: VMware Workstation Player 15.1.0

VMware has released version 15.1 Workstation Player. Player is free software to create and run virtual machines. However, a fee is charged for commercial use. Simply put, it is a simplified implementation of other VMware products, such as Workstation Pro, Server, and ESX Server. Microsoft Virtual PC virtual machines and Symantec LiveState Recovery disks are also supported. In addition, several pre-installed virtual machines can be installed via this page are downloaded, such as Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora. In version 15.1, support has been added for some new operating systems and some security vulnerabilities have been fixed.

This release of VMware Workstation Player addresses the following issues:

  • VMware Workstation 15.1 Player supports Hypervisor-Specific Mitigations and Hypervisor-Assisted Guest Mitigations for Microarchitectural Data Sampling (MDS) vulnerabilities identified by CVE-2018-12126, CVE-2018-12127, CVE-2018-12130 and CVE-2019-11091.   • VMware Workstation 15.1 Player addresses a DLL hijacking issue. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the identifier CVE-2019-5526 to this issue. For more information, see VMSA-2019-0007.
