Mono is an open-source implementation of the .NET Framework. Using Mono, developers can write cross-platform applications that will run not only on Windows systems, but also on Mac OS X, Linux, and Unix. The software includes a C# compiler, a .NET compatible runtime, and two different sets of APIs: a set that provides compatibility with Microsoft’s .NET Framework (including support for ASP.NET, ADO.NET, and a number of other components) and a set that offers a variety of Linux and Unix-specific features.

Mono Live is a so-called live CD provided with a Linux distribution with Mono 1.1.7 and various development and web applications. This allows you as a developer to try out Mono without an installation on your own system. The first release of Mono Live has been announced as follows:

Mono Live has launched, the brainchild of Joseph Hill. They are offering a Live CD of Mono for folks to try out the Mono development platform. It includes Mono, various Mono-based applications and .NET applications that you can take for a spin:

  • Development tools: Mono, MonoDoc, MonoDevelop.
  • Web portals: ASP.NET Forums, mojoPortal, IBuySpy.
  • Desktop Applications: Beagle, F-Spot, Tomboy, Muine
