Mandrake today released the final release of version 9.2 of its Linux distribution. The package has been christened Fivestar, which marks the company’s fifth anniversary. Mandrake Linux 9.2 contains a lot of new features and should maintain Mandrake’s reputation as the simplest Linux distro. The package has version 2.4.22 of the Linux kernel on board, and according to Mandrake should have no trouble with version 2.6.0 when it comes out. The complete marketing talk about what can be found in the downloads is here to find. The 64-bit version of the OS is still missing, but will follow later this month.

“Mandrake 9.2 marks a new step in MandrakeSoft’s quest to offer easy-to-use Linux products for all computer users. We’ve put extensive research and numerous innovations in the new 9.2 release, and the Mandrake 9.2 product line has been revamped to better suit users’ needs; particularly with the arrival of our first real desktop product — Mandrake Discovery”, declared François Bancilhon, CEO of MandrakeSoft.[break]Unfortunately, those who want to jump to the download button right now might be disappointed. Mandrake has decided to make the downloads available only to members of the MandrakeClub† Only at the end of October, when the full package is released in stores, will the ISOs of the slimmed-down version be available for everyone to download:[/break]The Download Edition ISO images are available now to MandrakeClub members and to the numerous developers and translators who contributed to making Mandrake 9.2. The public release of ISO images is scheduled for the end of October 2003, when Mandrake retail packs begin shipping.[break]
