Knoppix is ​​a Debian-based operating system and can be burned to a bootable writable CD. Almost all hardware is automatically detected at startup. Since no data can be written to CD, it has been made possible to put data on a memory or USB stick. During the day LinuxTag 2005 the developers of Knoppix have distributed the first version of the new 4.0 series on DVD.

From the 4.0 branch, the developers have split Knoppix into two versions. Knoppix Maxi is the DVD version while Knoppix Light is the small version for a CD. Currently only the Maxi version of the new 4.0.1 release is available for download. Due to the many updates and improvements, the Light edition has been postponed. The small edition would be released in a few days. The DVD version is via this FTP server or BitTorrent to slurp inside. The Knoppix 4.0.1 release notes look like this:
