The Linux platform consists of different distributions that have taken the Linux kernel as a basis, but all of them are put together slightly differently. This allows you to choose exactly the distribution you want for your system so that you can get optimal results.

Gentoo Linux was developed with the aim of automatically optimizing and adapting itself to your specific needs. In addition, you can install and configure all components separately. By using the Portage technology, you can set up Gentoo Linux for use as a secure server, professional workstation, game system, embedded system solution and many others.

The development team has recently released a new version for the different hardware platforms and has increased the version number to 2004.2. The short notice looks like this:

The Gentoo Linux Release Engineering project has worked hard to improve key problem areas identified in the 2004.1 release. These areas of improvement include, but are not limited to:

  • LiveCD compatibility with Dell server-class machines
  • LiveCD compatibility with SMP machines
  • x86 laptop PCMCIA support
  • Wireless (802.11a/b/g) capabilities
  • SATA support
