Software Update: µTorrent Mac 0.9.2 Build 16542 Beta

Since its first release, now four years ago, µTorrent has undisputedly become the most widely used BitTorrent client on the Windows platform. The program can also be used well under Linux with Wine. About a year ago a version for Mac OS X finally appeared. It was initially based on libtorrent, but later the development team made the decision to port the Windows version to Mac OS X. A new beta release was released last week and can be used for the first time on Mac computers equipped with a PowerPC processor. Below are all the changes made in this beta release:

New features:

• Support for PPC.
• UDP tracker support
• uTP supports window sizes smaller than the packet size

Changes:

• Added upnp host cache to speed up upnp nat resolution on certain routers
• Reduced uTP overhead slightly by ramping up packet sizes at lower rates

Fixed:

• 100% CPU usage bug
• fixed UDP-tracker crash when dns resolution would fail
• weird crash in low level network read and write
• Fix startup race condition between network and disk I/O thread
• UDP Tracker retries three times instead of two
• http seed fix for multifile torrents
• Fixed negative allocation in RequestChunks() for web seeds
• crash in UDP tracker support when tracker sends malformed responses
• Integrity check .dat files after saving. Do not overwrite file.dat.old with a bad file.dat
• uTP selective ack bug (would cause connections to stall and time out)
• uTP fast re-send bug (would sometimes re-send packets that shouldn’t be re-sent)
• uTP recovers faster after timeout
• http seeds would not reconnect after stopping and starting torrent
• http seed for multifile torrents
• uTP issue on low-latency high-throughput networks
• Copying long filenames to clipboard no longer results in garbage or crash
• Fixed web seed support for multi-file torrents
• Handle multi file torrents with web seed urls that incorrectly don’t end with a slash
• Make sure web seed urls end with a slash for multifile torrents
• uTP packet size fix. Sometimes it would send packets exceeding MTU. Fixes long standing rate oscillations.
• Fixed crash when receiving a malformed PEX message
• Crash when parsing some magnet uri components without values
• DHT bootstrap failures now have an exponential back-off
• uTP would not ramp up its rate fast enough
• Invalid encoding of non-ascii urls in web seeds
• uTP fix when receiving acks for old packets
• uTP variable packet size bug
