Snap initiates recall for Pixy drones due to battery fire hazard

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has initiated a recall for its Pixy drones. The lithium-ion battery in the device could ‘easily overheat’ and therefore pose a fire hazard. Owners who return the drone will receive their money back.

Although only the battery poses a risk, advises the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to stop using the drone altogether. That’s why Snap is recalling approximately 71,000 batteries. The company has received four reports of overheating and battery bulging. In one case, the battery caught fire, causing minor injury.

The Pixy drone came to the American and French markets in 2022 for $229. In addition to the drone and a case, the standard equipment also includes a rubber bumper, carrying strap and USB-C cable. A separate battery cost $20. However, four months after the drone’s release, Snap stopped development.
