Samsung will release Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 with improved hinge on August 11

Samsung introduces its next generation Galaxy Z Fold and Flip phones. Both foldables have a new hinge that allows them to fold flat. The Flip5 also has a larger cover screen on the outside. The phones will be released on August 11.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 has the biggest innovations compared to the previous generation. For example, the cover screen on the outside has been enlarged from 1.9″ to 3.4″. According to Samsung, supported apps can be used directly on that screen, such as Netflix, Google Maps, YouTube and WhatsApp. The screen can also be used to take selfies with the primary cameras and can show widgets, in addition to information such as the time, battery percentage or weather. The cover screen has a resolution of 720×748 pixels.

On the inside of the device there is again a 6.7″ Full HD+ AMOLED screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The device has a primary 12-megapixel camera and a 12-megapixel sensor with ultra-wide-angle lens. The selfie camera is incorporated in a hole in the screen and has a resolution of 10 megapixels.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 also has a new hinge, which Samsung calls a Flex Hinge. This hinge must ensure that the phone folds completely flat. With the previous generation, there is still space between the screen halves when the phone is closed. This also means that the device should be less thick when folded. Samsung mentions a thickness of 15.1mm when the Flip5 is closed, while the current Flip4 is 17.1mm.

The Flip5 also has a 3700mAh battery that can be charged with a maximum of 25W. The phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and has 8GB of memory as standard. The smartphone comes with 256GB or 512GB of storage. The device has a suggested retail price of 1199 euros and will be released on August 11.

Galaxy Z Fold5

Samsung also shows its new Galaxy Z Fold5. The device has a 7.6″ AMOLED screen on the inside with a refresh rate of 120Hz. That screen also offers a peak brightness that, according to the manufacturer, is up to 30 percent higher than that of the Fold4. On the outside there is a 6.2″ amoled screen, also with a 120Hz refresh rate. The current Fold4 has similar screens. Samsung does say that the Fold5 is its ‘thinnest and lightest’ Fold phone yet. The device measures approximately 129.9×154.9×6.1mm when unfolded and weighs 253 grams. This makes the device 0.2 mm less wide, high and thick and 10 grams lighter.

The Z Fold5 also gets the updated Flex Hinge hinge, which makes it close flatter. The thickness is now 13.4mm when folded. With the previous Fold4 this was still 15.8 mm. The Galaxy Z Fold5 also retains support for an S Pen stylus. This is supplied with a separately available S Pen case for the smartphone, which costs 99.95 euros. The phone also gets an improved taskbar, on which apps are permanently displayed. It shows up to four recently used apps on the Fold5.

The phone also has a primary 50-megapixel camera, a 10-megapixel sensor with telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. The selfie camera has a resolution of 10 megapixels. The device, just like the Flip5, comes with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC from Qualcomm. However, the device will have 12GB of memory. The 4400mAh battery supports fast charging at 25W. Samsung will release the Galaxy Z Fold5 on August 11 from 1899 euros.
