Samsung update adds Apple TV and Airplay 2 on 2019 TVs and some 2018 TVs

Samsung says it will release an update for all 2019 smart TVs and select 2018 TV models starting Monday. The software update will add the new Apple TV app and Airplay 2.

The South Korean manufacturer says it is the first TV manufacturer to offer the Apple TV app on its smart TVs. The update will be available for all smart TVs released this year, but also for a number of models from 2018. The manufacturer does not say which 2018 TVs that are, but a list from Apple shows that it includes various Qled models. from last year.

The Apple TV app is separate from Apple hardware and offers users a catalog of movies, TV shows, sports broadcasts, and news programs. For example, the movies and series from the iTunes library can be viewed via the app, including content in 4k resolution and with HDR. Starting this fall, this app will also provide access to Apple TV+, the proprietary streaming service Apple announced at the end of March that requires a subscription. AirPlay 2 allows users to stream videos, photos and music from their Apple devices or iTunes to their TV.

It was already clear that from this spring, Samsung’s smart TVs will be able to show movies and TV shows from iTunes and get AirPlay 2; At the beginning of this year, Apple and Samsung announced a collaboration to this end. Samsung claims to be the first to offer these services on its TVs, but it is not the only manufacturer to do so. For example, LG’s 2019 TVs will receive an update for AirPlay 2 halfway through this year and a number of new top models from Sony will also receive support for this.
