Samsung teases double folding smartphone screen

Samsung Display has posted a teaser for a multi-fold smartphone screen, allowing it to unfold like a card. Nothing is known about whether the technology will soon end up in smartphones.

Samsung Display, the electronics giant’s screen division, shows the technology in a blog post. This is a post intended to show the possibilities of folding screens, but there are no details in the post about format, resolution or other technical details. It is unknown whether Samsung will make a smartphone around this screen.

The South Korean manufacturer is not the first to show such a screen. TCL already did that earlier this year. The Chinese manufacturer showed various prototypes, partly to gauge the reactions and presumably to determine whether there should be a smartphone that works like this.

Xiaomi also showed a concept for a double folding screen two years ago, but has not yet continued to do so. Instead, it used a flexible OLED screen for a smartphone, whose screen is curled around the housing, the Mi Mix Alpha. Google has also filed a patent for a double folding screen.

Samsung has been showing concepts for folding screens for years. The lack of technical details indicates that the manufacturer is unlikely to deploy them anytime soon. It did release single-fold smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold2.
