Samsung shows transparent micro LED screens (update)

Spread the love

Samsung has shown off several transparent micro-LED screens that users can see completely or partially through. One of the screens has no screen edges. Samsung has not yet said when it wants to sell the transparent microLED screens.

Company says six years is working on transparent microLED screens and talks about ‘glass-like screens’. Samsung appears to want to sell the screens to consumers, although such transparent screens are also often mentioned for use in windows in subways or shops, for example. It is not clear when the screens should be ready for mass production.

Samsung presented the screens at a show prior to CES. Like other microLED displays, the new transparent screens consist of compact modules that can be placed next to and above each other. Samsung showed its transparent microLED screens next to transparent OLED and LCD screens, and it was noticeable that the brightness and transparency of the microLED screen on display were significantly better than those of the other two technologies. The clarity of the demo screens shown may be impressive, but the resolution is not. Because microLED uses inorganic LEDs that are individually mounted on a substrate, the pixel density is still relatively low.

Update, 3:40 p.m: Added information about comparison with OLED and LCD.
