Samsung is demonstrating a 37″ gaming monitor that can display 3D images without the user needing glasses. According to Samsung, the screen can also run VR content from platforms such as Steam. The monitor has eye and head tracking for this.

The screen is currently known like the Samsung 2D/3D Gaming Monitor. The monitor will have a 4k resolution with Neo QLED panel. That is the brand name that Samsung uses for its LCDs with quantum dots and a mini LED backlight. Samsung does not yet say what the refresh rate is.

According to the South Korean tech giant, the screen can display VR content without the need for additional hardware. The screen can analyze the user’s head position and eye movements to mimic VR movements. According to Samsung, this happens ‘without deterioration of brightness and color’. The viewing angle will therefore be limited compared to a real VR headset.

The screen can handle 3D and VR content from ‘platforms such as Steam’, Samsung claims. Presumably the screen won’t work natively with ‘roomscale’ VR games, which require a lot of space to move around, or VR titles that require VR controllers with hand tracking. It is not known when exactly the 2D/3D Gaming Monitor will appear on the market or what it will cost. Samsung says it will share more details about the screen later this year.

Update, Thursday: Added nuance about VR games that require a lot of room to move or VR controllers with hand tracking.
