Samsung design patent shows augmented reality glasses

A design patent that Samsung filed early this year and recently approved shows AR glasses. It is a design registration, so technical details are missing, but the glasses seem to contain two projection screens and two cameras.

The patent contains design sketches and Samsung has also made a render showing the AR glasses. The document came online last week and was spotted by GalaxyClub. The images make it clear that these are transparent glasses with projection screens. There also seem to be two cameras or sensors on the front. These could potentially be used to recognize hand gestures, so that they can be used in ar environments.

There is no official information about Samsung’s AR glasses. The manufacturer has indicated in recent years that it is working on such glasses. At the end of 2016, the South Korean manufacturer said it was considering entering into a partnership with Magic Leap for this. It is not known whether that happened. That manufacturer released its first headset for developers at the end of last year and calls it mixed reality glasses.

Several manufacturers have indicated that they see a future in AR glasses. Apple is rumored to release its AR glasses next year. It would only work with iPhones. Judging by the design, Samsung’s glasses also seem to contain little hardware of their own. It could also be a variant that works with a smartphone.
