Rust Core Team and Mozilla start foundation for Rust

Mozilla and the Rust development team announce that the programming language will have its own foundation. According to the team members, the current organization encountered more and more problems due to its growth and success.

The foundation of a foundation should be ready by the end of this year, the Rust Core Team and Mozilla report. Among other things, various trademark rights and domain names with regard to Rust and Cargo must be placed with the foundation, as well as the financial obligations involved.

The Rust foundation must make it clearer that it is an independent project with its own legal identity and bank account, which should, among other things, help to attract investments. It is not the intention that the foundation will make decisions that are now in the hands of the development teams, the initiators made clear when announcing the plans last year.

Rust originated with Mozilla Research. With the release of version 1.0, the project became independent. The Rust Core Team reports that the announced layoffs at Mozilla have also caused unrest at Rust. The impact of this will remain limited, they expect, as Mozilla developers have already contributed independently and will likely continue to do so despite their resignation.

Rust is a programming language that focuses on performance, reliability and productivity and is used by Mozilla, Discord and Microsoft, among others.
