According to Polygon sources, the Xbox One ‘Scorpio’ will have more than four times the processing power of the Xbox One. The new console would also be faster than the PlayStation 4 Neo. The rumor speaks of a computing power of 6 teraflops.

After Kotaku released the news on Wednesday that Microsoft is coming with a new console that is compatible with the Oculus Rift, Polygon has released additional information. According to sources from the website, Microsoft wants to turn the current roles: now the PlayStation 4 is slightly more powerful than the Xbox One, so games on the Sony console sometimes run at a slightly higher resolution.

The new Xbox model, codenamed Scorpio, is said to have a processing power of 6 teraflops. Kotaku updated his original post, saying he heard numbers ranging from 5 to 6 teraflops. The website also says that the specifications are not yet fixed. Previous documentation on the PS4 Neo indicated that Sony’s new console is likely to get 4.4 teraflops of computing power. According to Polygon, the processing power of the current Xbox One and PS4 amounts to 1.32 and 1.84 teraflops, respectively.

According to Polygon sources, the ‘Scorpio’ is likely to hit the market by the end of 2017. However, an announcement may already follow at E3 in mid-June. Microsoft would feel compelled to announce the new console soon, because Sony is coming with a new version of the PlayStation 4 faster than expected. Games made for the Scorpio will probably also work on the current Xbox One. In theory, however, the graphics settings could be significantly increased on the new console.

In any case, Polygon is certain that Microsoft will announce a smaller version of the Xbox One at E3. This ‘smart’ model probably has no more computing power than the current model, but would be 40 percent smaller and will have the ability to play 4k videos, according to The Verge. It should be the smallest Xbox ever in terms of size and the hardware revision is expected to go on sale in August.
