Samsung is rumored to announce its first Exynos chip with an integrated AMD GPU in July. That chip will have an RDNA 2 GPU and is intended for high-end smartphones, AMD confirmed earlier this year.

Ice universe, a generally reliable leaker who regularly shares correct information about unannounced Samsung products, states that AMD and Samsung would initially announce the upcoming Exynos chip this month. The Twitter user also mentions that the two companies have postponed this announcement until July for unknown reasons. At the announcement, the companies would provide details about the performance of AMD’s RDNA2 GPU in the Exynos chip.

Samsung has been working with AMD for GPUs in its chips since 2019. The upcoming Exynos soc would be the first Samsung chip with an integrated AMD GPU. AMD already gave some details about the upcoming Samsung chip during Computex. The soc would be intended for use in high-end smartphones and an RDNA2 GPU. That GPU architecture is also used in AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 video cards, as well as the current-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles.

The mobile chip will in any case get support for ray tracing and variable rate shading. With the latter, the GPU can variably apply shading to every part of the screen. For example, rougher shading can be applied to certain parts of the screen, for example to less detailed objects, which should improve the rendering speed without a major impact on the image quality. Variable rate shading is already supported by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, but this would be the first smartphone chip with hardware support for ray tracing.
