Rumor: Samsung is going to buy LCD panels from Sharp again

Samsung would again buy LCD panels from Sharp, because it itself will stop producing LCDs at the end of this year. Samsung has also purchased LCDs from Sharp in the past, but the company stopped doing so at the beginning of 2017.

According to DigiTimes, Samsung needs LCD panels from external suppliers, because the company is phasing out the production of LCDs itself. It would be large panels for TVs. The Taiwanese newspaper relies on industry sources. By purchasing panels from Sharp, Samsung can continue to make LCD TVs. Samsung has bought LCDs from Sharp for years, but stopped doing so in 2017, after the acquisition of Sharp by Foxconn.

At the end of March, Samsung announced that it would stop producing LCDs. The South Korean manufacturer would like to convert its own factories to make OLED panels with quantum dots. Samsung already confirmed last year that it is working on that. The first 65″ panel with that technology should appear in 2021.
