Magic Leap, a company that makes headsets for augmented reality, is considering a sale. That writes financial news agency Bloomberg. The company from the US state of Florida has received several billion dollars in investments in recent years.

The medical company Johnson & Johnson, among others, is said to be interested, Bloomberg reports. Magic Leap is also said to have been in talks with Oculus parent company Facebook, but that would not be interested in an acquisition. Magic Leap develops headsets that can superimpose images over the user’s field of view. Microsoft, among others, makes the HoloLens headsets that can do the same and more companies are working on such devices.

The company, which has received major investments from Google and Qualcomm, among others, has recently started to focus on medical and industrial applications for augmented reality, now that consumer interest has not developed as it thought. MagicLeap founder and CEO Rony Abovitz let me know on Twitter that teams are working on a prototype of the Magic Leap 2 and the R&D for the Magic Leap 3.

The Magic Leap One headset was released in August 2018. The nearly $2300 device is only available in the US and aimed at developers who want to create applications for augmented reality. At fifty degrees, the field of view is much more limited than that of many VR goggles. The Magic Leap One runs on LuminOS, its own operating system.
