Rumor: Apple is working on next-generation iPod Touch

Apple is said to be working on a new generation of iPod Touch models, a Japanese blog claims. The current model dates from 2015 and since then no new ones have appeared. The iPod Touch first appeared in 2007.

Apple would like to have a cheap new iOS device on the shelves to sell its services to customers who don’t want or can’t afford an iPhone, Macotakara claims. The Japanese site often relies on sources from suppliers, which often means that concrete information about, for example, when products come out is missing. For example, the blog early erased the dimensions and features of the new iPad Pro and predicted the MacBook Pro’s move from MagSafe to USB-C.

The claim is in line with Apple CEO Tim Cook’s earlier statement that services are important to Apple. The company also plans to release a new service this year. This is probably a streaming service for, for example, series. Apple already has a music streaming service with Music.

Macotakara knows nothing further about the specs and functions of the new iPod Touch. The site also mentions that Apple is in the process of transitioning iPhones from Lightning to USB-C, but it’s unknown if the company will be ready for the move this year or if USB-C will come in a next generation of iPhones. Apple releases MacBooks and iPad Pros with only USB-C, but the cheaper iPad and new iPhones still have Apple’s own Lightning connector.
