Rocket League will get a 120fps mode on Xbox Series X and S. The game uses render resolutions of 2688×1512 and 1344×756 pixels respectively. There is no mention of a 120fps mode for the PlayStation 5.

Developer Psyonix writes that Rocket League is available immediately with improvements for the next-gen consoles. On the Xbox Series X, the game now runs in 4k resolution with 60fps and hdr. With the Series S that is 1080p with 60fps and hdr. The PlayStation 5 version uses a 4k resolution with checkerboarding, in combination with 60fps and hdr. That is the same as the PS4 Pro version.

The Xbox versions will get an update later this year with a Video Quality setting. You can then choose Quality with the aforementioned settings, or Performace, in which the game runs at 120fps. The resolution scales to 70 percent, which comes down to 2688×1512 pixels for the Series X and 1344×756 pixels for the Series S. The game’s interface continues to work in 4k and 1080p. HDR also remains available in combination with the high frame rate.

It is not yet known when the 120fps mode will come to Rocket League, Psyonix only reports that it will be sometime later this year. The developer does not mention a choice between a Quality and Performance mode for the PlayStation 5 version. It is therefore not clear whether that option will be available.

Earlier this week, EA announced that Star Wars: Squadrons will also get a 120fps mode on the Xbox Series X and S, but not on the PlayStation 5. EA also gave no further explanation about this. While the PS5 is slightly less powerful on paper than the Xbox Series X, the lack of 120fps mode is unlikely to be related to that. After all, both games also get that mode on the Series S, which has much less computing power than the PlayStation 5.

Update, 10:25 PM: VentureBeat writes that games developed for the PlayStation 4 can run at a maximum of 60fps on the PS5. That’s a limitation of the backward compatibility mode. There is no such limitation with the Xbox Series X and S. Presumably this explains the absence of the 120fps modes in Rocket League and Star Wars: Squadrons for the PlayStation 5. After all, the games were developed for the PlayStation 4 and are now getting a relatively simple update. Presumably the games would need further tweaking to utilize the full capabilities of the PS5.
