The roadmap of future Google Pixel phones may have been leaked. An unknown source states that the Pixel 8a will have a smaller screen than its predecessor and that several foldables are planned, including a fold-out model.

An ‘anonymous but reliable’ source reports to Android Authority that two Pixel devices will be released in April or May 2023, with code names ‘Lynx’ and ‘Felix’. These are the Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold respectively. The price of the Pixel 7a will reportedly remain the same as the Pixel 6a, at $449. In the Benelux the device costs 459 euros. According to the source, the foldable will have a suggested retail price of $1,799.

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro
The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will reportedly follow later in 2023. The source states that – apart from the display – little changes compared to the Pixel 7 series. The display of the Pixel 8, codenamed ‘Shiba’, may be smaller than its predecessor. It is not clear how much smaller. The Pixel 8 Pro, or ‘Husky’, keeps the same screen dimensions as the Pixel 7 Pro. The silicon for the Pixel 8 series is codenamed ‘Zuma’. It may be the Tensor G3 socket.

Pixel 8a and Pixel 9 series
According to Android Authority, the Pixel 8a, the Pixel 9 series and a new foldable are expected in 2024. The arrival of the Pixel 8a, codenamed ‘Akita’, may depend on the sales figures of the Pixel 7a. According to the source, Google is considering a similar release schedule as Apple uses with the iPhone SE series, with a new device in the series appearing every two years. The Pixel 8a is reportedly getting a price increase from $449 to $499. It is not known whether and how this translates into the price in euros.

Google is expected to release the Pixel 9 series in the fall of 2024. For the first time, this would consist of three devices, the source said. This concerns a vanilla Pixel 9 and two Pro models. These apparently run on the Tensor G4 SoC, codenamed ‘Redondo’.

The Pixel 9 will reportedly have the same size as the Pixel 8. The device is therefore once again smaller than the Pixel 7. One Pixel 9 Pro is codenamed ‘Komodo’ and has a 6.7″ display. The second Pro device the series will have a 6.3″ screen. Furthermore, the specs between the two are reportedly the same, although these are not yet known. According to the source, Google wants to emulate Apple’s “successful strategy in device formats,” according to Android Authority.

Even more foldables?
Apparently, Google is also considering releasing a successor to the Pixel Fold in 2024. No further information is known about it. According to Android Authority, the tech giant may first wait for the reactions to its first foldable.

For Google, the 2025 release schedule may depend mainly on the successes and failures in previous years. Android Authority states that Google is playing with the idea of a foldable in the style of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip devices. The arrival of this seems to depend on the sales figures of the Pixel Fold and the successor to the foldable.
