References to video calling pop up in Instagram application for Android

Instagram appears to be working on an audio and video calling capability. The social network has not disclosed itself, but hints of the new functionality have been found in the Android application.

TechCrunch discovered this, who received a tip from a reader. In the installation file for the Instagram application for Android, after sifting through it, references were found to being able to make phone calls or video calls; the necessary icons for the new functionality are already built into the application.

Instagram itself would not say anything about the possibility for phone calls or video calls. As a result, it is still unclear whether the company actually wants to introduce the conversation functionality found, although the finding makes it very plausible. In addition, rumors have come out about a possible introduction of video calling within Instagram.

Competing social media already has audio and video calling functionality. These include Snapchat and Facebook Messenger. Incidentally, Instagram is also owned by Facebook.
