A CEO of the former Xiaomi subsidiary Redmi has posted a teaser that appears to show that Redmi is working on an update that will allow a 144Hz refresh rate on the Redmi K30 smartphone. That smartphone came out last month.

The teaser on Weibo shows a demo of the Redmi K30 5G at 144Hz. The CEO says that it is an experiment and it is unknown whether the function will be released as an update for the phone. The highest refresh rate on a phone to date is 120Hz, on Razer Phone 2 and Asus ROG Phone II, among others. There are monitors that support 144Hz.

It is unknown what Redmi wants with the technology. The K30 5G is a mid-range smartphone with a 15.45cm by 7.45cm LCD with a 6.67″ diagonal and a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels. The phone was released in China last month. There is no word yet on a European release.

High refresh rate seems to be coming to many more phones for some time now. Google put a 90Hz screen on its Pixel 4 phones. OnePlus uses 90Hz screens for its 7 Pro and 7T models, but goes to 120Hz this year. Samsung would also like to use a 120Hz screen on its Galaxy S20 phones.
