Qualcomm has announced that it will let Samsung produce its first 10nm soc. According to the American chip designer, the 10nm process is a lot more economical, which should lead to a better battery life. The first soc is called Snapdragon 835 and succeeds the Snapdragon 821.

The first smartphones with the Snapdragon 835 will appear in the first half of next year, Qualcomm says. This makes it ready for the next generation of top models from manufacturers such as OnePlus, HTC and LG, who invariably work with the high-end socs of the American chip designer. Qualcomm is not disclosing any further details about the 835.

The announcement is not unexpected. The American company had already said that it would make the step to 10nm next year. Moreover, Samsung had already made it clear that mass production had started on that new process. The 10nm production process would be comparable in some dimensions in features and density to the 14nm production at Intel.

The 835 will be one of the first socs to support Quick Charge 4.0. According to the manufacturer, charging is up to 20 percent faster than with Quick Charge 3.0. In addition, the technology is compatible with USB power delivery, the USB Implementers Forum’s fast charging standard. Google strongly recommends that compatibility in new versions of Android.
