Qualcomm has announced three new Snapdragon processors. They fall in the midrange class and are mainly intended for cheaper phones that still support 4G. The Snapdragons also have support for 802.11ax, or WiFi 6.

It concerns the Snapdragon 720G, the Snapdragon 662 and the Snapdragon 460, Qualcomm writes. The three new processors are mainly aimed at 4G, but should improve ‘artificial intelligence’ and photography on devices. The 720G is the most high-end of the three new socs. That soc will appear in Xiaomi gaming phones in the future. The first devices with the 720G have yet to appear this quarter. Qualcomm expects to see the first devices with the 662 at the end of the year.

The phones do not support 5G, a technology that most smartphone and chip manufacturers are now working on. They do support 4g as standard, just like 802.11ax annex Wi-Fi 6 and bluetooth 5.2. The 720G also supports HDR video streaming and can achieve a maximum download speed of 800Mbit/s. Both the 662 and the 460 achieve maximum download speeds of 390Mbit/s.

The socs are all largely focused on photography, according to Qualcomm. They all support three camera configurations on phones. The chips are also aimed at the use of artificial intelligence in telephones. This is done, among other things, by integrating Qualcomm’s own AI Engine, which, in combination with an SDK, allows developers to ensure that their camera or audio components distribute the computing power more efficiently.
