Presumed specs AMD EPYC Genoa CPUs with Zen 4 cores appear online

The suspected specifications of AMD’s EPYC server processors codenamed Genoa and Zen 4 cores have surfaced online. The architecture would support a maximum of 96 cores and 192 threads, supplemented by DDR5-5200 memory with twelve channels and PCIe 5.0.

The information comes from Twitter account ExecutableFix, where unannounced data about CPUs have appeared before. Last year, for example, the user prematurely placed the specifications of AMD’s Ryzen 5000 laptop processors that had ultimately proved correct. AMD has not officially released any information about the AMD EPYC Genoa CPUs with Zen 4 cores yet. However, the company made it clear earlier that the Genoa generation will appear next year and will be made on a 5nm process. These will be AMD’s first server processors with Zen 4 cores; the next generation, the AMD EPYC Milan server processors with Zen 3 cores, won’t be released until next month.

The 96 cores would be made possible by a design of twelve chiplets with eight cores each, supplemented with a separate I/O die. That would mean that AMD will not increase the number of cores per chiplet further, but will increase the total number of cores by integrating more chiplets. ExecutableFix places an image what Genoa’s design could look like, which could be a more square design.

In any case, according to his information, there will be a new socket. In addition, the Genoa EPYC server processors would support the PCIe 5.0 interface with 128 lanes, or 160 lanes in a two-socket configuration. The tdp would come out at 320W; that’s 40W higher than the upcoming Milan and current Roman CPUs with Zen 2 cores. The tdp could be configured for a maximum of 400W with the Genoa CPUs.

The new Genoa cores will appear in the El Capitan supercomputer, among other things. It would have a computing power of 2.2 exaflops, which is much higher than today’s most powerful supercomputer. In the context of this El Capitan supercomputer, AMD previously said that the EPYC Genoa processors with its Zen 4 cores will deliver significantly more IPC than the upcoming Milan processors, but it is still unknown how big this improvement will be.
