Polestar to launch an electric convertible in 2026

Polestar will produce an electric convertible from 2026. It will be called the 6 and will use the 800V powertrain of the 5. Earlier this year, the company showed a concept of a convertible, which will serve as the basis for the production car.

In March, Polestar showed the O2, a convertible sports car concept. It company says to have received good reactions from both customers and media when the concept was introduced. That is why the company now wants to take the car into production as the 6.

The Polestar 6 will be a hardtop convertible, with the roof made of metal and not of fabric. The convertible gets Polestar’s aluminum platform and the same 800V powertrain as the Polestar 5. This powertrain has two electric motors with a combined output of 650kW, or 884hp, and 900Nm of torque. Polestar is aiming for a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h.

Additional technical details are not yet known; which the company wants to announce later. At the moment there are few electric convertibles, although Tesla and MG are working on new electric convertibles. The 6 has room for four passengers.

The O2 has several features that are unlikely to be on the production model, such as an autonomous drone behind the rear seats. This could take off while driving and film the car. Images could be sent to the car and the driver, when the car is parked, could view and share these images with the infotainment screen.

It is not the first time that Polestar says it is making a production model from a concept. Previously, the company did that with the Precept, for example, which should become the 5. This is a four-door liftback. In October this year, the 3 should appear, an suv. Next year, Polestar plans to unveil the 4, a smaller SUV. Now Polestar produces the 2.
