Oppo has released an update to the hdr10+ standard for its UDP-203 and UDP-205. These are two existing high-end UHD Blu-ray players. However, Oppo no longer makes Blu-ray players or audio systems.

Oppo reports that users of the UDP-203 and UDP-205 can upgrade the firmware in two ways: via a USB stick or with a firmware disc compiled via the computer. The addition of support for the hdr10+ standard is the major innovation of the update.

The manufacturer surprised in April 2018 with the announcement that it is leaving the market for audio systems and Blu-ray players. Oppo said at the time that owners of existing Oppo Blu-ray players could still count on updates and new firmware in the future.

The two UHD Blu-ray players already had support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The latter standard is the competitor of the open standard hdr10+. Samsung, together with an alliance of film companies and other manufacturers with hdr10+, wants to steal market share from Dolby Vision developed by Dolby Labs.

Unlike Dolby Vision, there are as yet few uhd-blu-rays with hdr10+. In October, the first two were announced: A beautiful planet and Journey to the South Pacific. These are also two discs that carry the Imax Enhanced label. Imax announced this certification program in September and applies post-production techniques to improve 4K HDR reproduction in living rooms.
