Nvidia to provide GTX 1060 version with GP104 GPU

Nvidia is said to be planning to use flawed GP104 GPUs that were actually intended for the GTX 1070 and 1080 for a GTX 1060 version. It wouldn’t be faster than the current GTX 1060’s, but might consume more.

The current GTX 1060 is built around the GP106 GPU, a chip based on the Pascal architecture, which is baked on the 16nm process. The GPU has 1280 stream processors. The GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 have a more powerful GPU, the GP104, with 2560 and 1920 cuda cores respectively.

According to Videocardz, Nvidia will use a variant of this GPU, the GP104-140, for the GTX 1060 3GB. This card is already on the market under this name, but with a GP106 with 1152 stream processors. It is not known how many working cores the GP104 of the upcoming GTX 1060 3GB will have.

Videocardz does expect that the card will not be faster than the current GTX 1060 3GB, but it will consume more. To avoid confusion, the map would not be released worldwide, but would be limited to China, for example. It is also standard practice for chip manufacturers to supply CPUs or GPUs with defects as less powerful models, with certain parts disabled.
