In the game No Man’s Sky, released on Wednesday, a meeting between two players took place on a planet on the first day. However, the two could not see each other. It is unclear whether this is an error.

The meeting took place between players ‘TheSadCactus’ and ‘Psytokat’, who shared the event with the public via Twitch and announced it via Reddit. One of the players had discovered a planet recently discovered by the other, after which they made contact and were then present in the same location. In addition, the players could not see each other, which raised doubts about previous reports that this would be possible. For example, developer Sean Murray had said that players would be able to see each other’s spacesuits.

The chances of two players meeting each other is very small, because the game consists of 18 trillion planets. Murray was also very suprised that a meeting took place on the first day. He did not directly address the fact that the players were invisible to each other. For example, he stated in a number of tweets that the intention is for players to be aware of the fact that they are in a shared universe and that therefore there is the possibility to perform a scan for nearby players. He adds that there are “online features” and easter eggs in the game to create special moments, but that there are too many players online at the moment for this to happen.

Murray also reported in a recent tweet that No Man’s Sky “isn’t a multiplayer game and people shouldn’t be looking for that experience.” As a result, it is not clear whether it is even the intention that players can see each other. The PlayStation 4 version of the game was released on Wednesday and the Windows version will follow on Friday. On the first day, ten million different species have already been discovered in the game, which revolves around discovering planets and their living organisms in a vast universe.
