On July 21, Nintendo will release the Switch Online app for smartphones. This allows players to invite each other to play. Splatnet 2 is part of Splatoon 2, which will also be released on July 21.

SplatNet 2 is a smartphone service that allows players of Splatoon 2 on Switch to view stats, game schedules and equipment information. The service is part of Switch Online, which is the social app that Nintendo uses to connect Switch players. Players must use the smartphone app to send invitations and chat with each other.

The app will be free to use from July 21, but in 2018 Nintendo will expand the service and will then charge $3.99 per month, $7.99 per quarter or $19.99 per year for Nintendo Switch Online. Players will also be able to play classic NES games such as Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario unlimited play.

Nintendo revealed the details during a Nintendo Direct broadcast about Splatoon 2 for the Switch.
