Nginx, the company behind the web server of the same name, reports that more than 146 million websites now run on the web server software. A year ago, the counter stood at 96 million websites running on the open source web server.

The company also revealed that of the thousand most visited websites, 38 percent run Nginx, compared to 31.6 percent a year ago. The rapid growth figures of Nginx, with an annual growth rate of more than 50 percent, were announced with the release of version 1.6 as stable version and version 1.7 in the so-called mainline release channel. At the beginning of April, the company released Nginx Plus Release 3, a commercial version of the web server with extra functionalities.

Nginx says it will release new tools for the open source web server in the coming months, according to TechCrunch. For example, a new management and administration tool is required to be able to control large numbers of Nginx sites. Work is also underway to improve collaboration with the Linux kernel, which will allow the web server software to perform better on websites that cache large amounts of data.
