Devolver Digital has shown new gameplay from Serious Sam 4 during the Devolver Direct stream, which takes place in lieu of the canceled E3. The game will still be released in August, but when in that month is unknown.

The trailer also provides some background information. Main character Sam Stone says that he “used to be a spaceship captain” and that he explored the universe. That time has now passed, however, as antagonist Mental’s alien armies have invaded Earth.

For the rest, the game seems to be a classic Serious Sam title: the weapons, enemies and environments are very reminiscent of previous games, including the original from 2001. However, the video description on YouTube does state that Sam is a “heavily armed squad of commandos” which may imply that there will be characters fighting with Sam in this part.

Croatian Croteam revealed in May that the game will have levels with hundreds of thousands of enemies on the screen at once, but no technical explanation was given. The game is coming to Steam and Google Stadia sometime in August. The game costs $33.99 on Steam.
