Apple has unveiled new iPad Pro models with 11″ and 12.9″ screens. The tablets have a new design with less bezel around the screen and 3D facial scanner Face ID. The cheapest version is 899 euros, the most expensive 2119 euros.
Since authentication works with Face ID, Touch ID in the Home button is no longer necessary. Like the iPhone X models, the new iPad Pro models feature gesture controls. The iPad Pro models come with 11″ and 12.9″ screens. The housing of the 11″ iPad is the same size as last year’s 10.5″ iPad, while the 12.9″ version is smaller. The housing is also thinner.
The new iPad Pro models also have flattened sides, much like the iPhone 5s and SE. The LCD, which Apple refers to as Liquid Retina, has rounded corners and it is again a screen with ProMotion with 120 fps.
The new iPad Pro models run on an A12X soc, made on TSMC’s 7nm process. It has an octa-core processor and a GPU with seven cores. The A12 from the iPhone XS and XR has six processor cores and four GPU cores. According to Apple, the iPad Pro has about the graphics performance of an Xbox One S console. The ‘neural engine’ in the A12X seems similar to that of the A12. In terms of storage, there will be a 1TB variant, due to a new storage controller.
Apple exchanges its own Lightning connection for USB-C. This allows users to connect external displays and other accessories. Moreover, it is possible to charge an iPhone via the iPad. The 3.5mm jack from previous iPads is missing on the new models.
The Pencil has had a redesign and can be magnetically attached to the iPad thanks to 102 magnets on the edge of the housing. In addition, it charges when users click on it. There will also be a keyboard for the iPad Pro, which is also magnetically attached to the iPad. The 11 “version costs from 899 euros. Those are the 64GB variants. The Pros will be released on November 7.
In addition to the new iPad Pros, Apple will keep last year’s 10.5″ variant in its range, which costs 737 euros. In addition, the 2018 iPad and iPad Mini 4 remain for sale.
