NASA has temporarily lost contact with the Voyager 2 spacecraft. The space agency accidentally misaligned the antenna during a planned command series. Contact is expected to be restored later.

During the planned command sequence, the Voyager 2 probe’s antenna is now positioned two degrees away from Earth, NASA says. This has interrupted Voyager 2’s contact with the Deep Space Network on Earth. The space probe can currently no longer receive commands or send data to Earth.

NASA expects the loss of contact to be temporary. The Voyager 2 probe is programmed to change the position of its antennas several times a year. This should ensure that they remain focused on Earth. The next reset will take place on October 15. Contact with Voyager 2 is expected to be restored.

The Voyager 2 probe was launched in 1977 and is currently nearly 12 billion miles from Earth. The probe was intended to conduct research on Uranus and Neptune, among others, but has now reached interstellar space. The probe also has a gold plate on board with information about Earth and humanity.
