Publisher Starbreeze, the parent company of Payday developer Overkill, has bought all the rights to the franchise. As a result, the microtransactions added to Payday 2 will disappear. It has also been announced that work is underway on Payday 3.

Starbreeze pays 30 million dollars, converted a small 27 million euros, to publisher 505 Games. By acquiring the Payday rights, Starbreeze now has full control over the games in the series. The Swedish publisher also owns Overkill Software, the development studio that makes the Payday games.

Part of the deal is that 505 Games will receive 33 percent of Starbreeze’s future revenue from the sale of Payday 3, up to a maximum of $40 million. Payday 3 has not yet been officially announced and nothing is known about the new game yet.

In a video, the developers of Payday 2 announced that the microtransactions will be removed from the game. Its addition at the end of last year was accompanied by a lot of criticism, because gamers believed that a pay2win situation was created. At the time, the developer stated that it was not possible to continue supporting the game without additional revenue from microtransactions. Now that parent company Starbreeze owns the rights, that no longer seems to apply. Overkill Software adds that the studio will continue to support Payday 2 with updates for another 18 months.

Starting now and backdated to May 1, Starbreeze will be getting all of the Payday 2 sales on Steam and the sales from the Payday apps for mobile devices. 505 Games will remain the publisher of Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and revenue from that console version will be shared between the two publishers.
