Microsoft will achieve about as much ad revenue as Yahoo this year, according to estimates by market research firm eMarketer. This puts Microsoft in third place, behind Google and Facebook.

Microsoft would this year arrive at a market share of 2.54 percent, good for a turnover of 3.56 billion dollars, or 2.6 billion euros. That’s a fraction more than Yahoo, with a share of 2.52 percent; because these are estimates that can deviate from actual revenue and the year is far from over, it is impossible to say who will actually achieve more revenue from advertising in the end. If Microsoft makes more sales, it would be the first time Microsoft surpasses Yahoo, according to eMarketer. The latter has seen its market share steadily decline in recent years.

The undisputed market leader remains Google for the time being. The internet giant would again have a market share of 31 percent this year, a score that was also achieved in 2012 and 2013. The number two is Facebook. Since 2012, the advertising revenue achieved by the social networking site has doubled.

Another riser is Twitter. Although the market share was 0.5 percent in 2013, the now listed company would increase to 0.79 percent for this year. According to eMarketer, both Facebook and Twitter are benefiting from the increasing use of mobile phones.
