Microsoft releases Windows 11 virtual machine for developers

Microsoft has made a free Windows 11 Enterprise virtual machine available. The VM allows software developers to develop and test applications for the new version of Microsoft’s operating system.

Microsoft has published the Windows 11 Enterprise VM on its website and it is available for free download. Although it says at the top of the page that it is a “Windows 10 developer environment”, the latest version is indeed for Windows 11. According to Microsoft, the Windows 11 VM is “ready to use” and can be used to develop applications for the operating system .

The package is about 20GB and contains, in addition to the installation of Windows 11, also various tools and options for developers. The full package includes:

  • Window 11 Enterprise (evaluation)

  • Windows 10 SDK, version 2004 (10.0.19041.0)

  • Visual Studio 2019

  • Visual Studio Code (latest as of 10/09/21)

  • Windows Subsystem for Linux enabled with Ubuntu installed

  • Developer mode enabled

  • Windows Terminal installed

The VM is available for various types of VM programs that can create virtual machines. At the moment you can download the package for VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox and Parallels.
