Microsoft is testing power saving mode in Windows 11 that also works for desktops

Microsoft is testing a power saving mode for Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary Channel. This should ‘expand and improve’ the existing battery saving function. Unlike the latter, the Energy Saving feature should also work for desktops.

When enabled, this feature extends battery life and reduces power consumption ‘by sacrificing some system performance’, writes Microsoft. The function seems to have the same aim as the existing Battery Saver function. It is unclear exactly how Energy Saving differs from the existing feature, besides the fact that the new feature can also be used on desktop computers to save on power consumption.

Users can choose to always enable this mode, or, in the case of laptops, to activate it automatically when the device reaches a certain battery percentage. Like Battery Saver, Power Saver mode can be turned on and off through the Quick Settings, or through the Battery section in the Windows 11 system settings. The feature was made available in Preview Build 26002 of the Canary Channel. It is still unclear when this will become generally available.
