Microsoft is once again warning users about the impending end of TLS 1.0 and 1.1. Those outdated versions of the Transport Layer Security protocol will be replaced by TLS 1.3 in the future.

Microsoft issues that warning in an advisory. In it, the company writes that TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are now outdated, because security problems occurred more and more often. “Therefore, TLS 1.0 and 1.1 will be disabled by default in future versions of Windows,” the company wrote.

The next version in which this will happen is the Windows 11 Insider Preview, which will be released this month. There is still an option to re-enable the old versions of TLS for those who need it for old applications, for example. Microsoft also says that the functionality will only be disabled in new versions of Windows, but will remain in existing versions.

TLS 1.0 and 1.1 have been discouraged by security experts for years. The more recent TLS 1.3 is more secure. Microsoft has also been phasing out support for the protocol from its software for just as many years. This previously happened in browsers such as Edge and IE and later in Office 365. In Windows, the company gave users more time, because a lot of software still used the old TLS versions. However, the company has warned users about this more often in the past.
