The Meta Oversight Board, which considers moderation decisions on Facebook and Instagram, has asked the public for opinions on the removal of a video of US President Joe Biden. The clip has been adjusted and provided with its own text.

In the video Biden puts an ‘I voted’ sticker on his granddaughter during elections two years ago. The video features a rap song while referring to Biden as a “sick pedophile.” This is real footage, but the context of the video has changed. The Oversight Board is considering or hearing these types of videos on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta removes videos that have clearly been modified with AI, for example. Due to the changed context, such a video spreads misinformation around election time and that could be harmful. On the other hand, the video doesn’t put words in Biden’s mouth and Meta prefers not to delete videos. The Oversight Board will seek input over the next two weeks and then announce a decision within two months.
