Marketing slides have appeared of the Phoenix, a smartphone that the Finnish manufacturer HMD may release as Nokia 8.1. The phone has the same specs as the Nokia X7, which appeared in China earlier this year.

According to the slides NPU posted online, the Nokia 8.1 will have a 6.18″ LCD with a resolution of 2280×1080 pixels. That display has a notch at the top. Despite the width, it seems that the notch only has a front camera and includes the usual sensors and speaker, but no 3D face scanner. On the back of the phone, the renders show a fingerprint scanner.

The soc is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, while the slightly smaller Nokia 7.1 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 soc. Both are socs for midrange phones, where the Nokia 8 and 8 Sirocco have a Snapdragon 835, from the series of processors for high-end phones. That indicates that HMD will release higher-rated phones in the future, such as Nokia 9. The same thing happened with Nokia’s Lumia series six years ago; At first, the Lumia 800 was the most expensive model, but the 800 series became for midrange phones, while high-end models came out in the Lumia 900 series.

The slides put a lot of emphasis on the front camera, which with a sensor size of 1/2.55″ and a pixel size of 1.4 microns is on the large side for a front camera. The resolution is a maximum of twenty megapixels. The screenshot also indicates a portrait mode for the front camera The rear cameras have Zeiss lenses and resolutions of twelve and thirteen megapixels, but the slides don’t say much about that.

HMD presented a device with this appearance and these specs in October in China, under the name X7. There will be variants with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, or 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. No prices for the Phoenix have been announced yet. HMD is holding an event in Dubai next week, where it is expected to showcase the new smartphone.
