The computer worm malware from the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may have entered the game by exploiting an old bug in the game. A security researcher would have reported this five years ago, but the vulnerability would never have been fixed by Activision.

Security researcher Maurice Heumann tells TechCrunch that out a sample of the malware’s code turns out that this exploits the old bug. He claims to have found the vulnerability in question in 2018 and subsequently informed Activision, but the game company allegedly did nothing with the report. The reason why is unknown. TechCrunch says it has seen Heumann’s emails to Activision. According to him, it is very easy to exploit the bug and cause a buffer overflow. He says that for this reason he has not previously released information about the bug.
