The L’Oreal brand has created a UV sensor that users can wear on the thumb. The UV power of the sunlight that has fallen on the thumb can then be read by means of an app and NFC. The sensor can store the data for up to three months.

The sensor allows users to keep track of how much UV light they have been exposed to for safe sunbathing, L’Oreal reports. The sensor was developed with technology company MC10. The sensor has an NFC chip and both Android phones and iPhones can read the data. With an accompanying app, the data can be converted into visualizations of the amount of UV light to which users have been exposed.

L’Oreal packs several doses of glue into the package so users can use the sensor more than once. It fits on a nail, but can also sit on, for example, a watch. The aim is to make users more aware of the harmful effects of UV radiation on the skin. The UV sensor will be released in the United States next summer and will be available worldwide from next year. It will cost less than fifty dollars on release, writes The Verge.
