LG sells two million cookies in five months

LG has seen two million copies of its Cookie, or the KP500, sold worldwide since the device was released in October of last year. The cheap touchscreen phone appears to be especially popular in Europe.

LG wanted to tap into a new market segment with the Cookie. The market for touchscreen smartphones was dominated by high-end devices in 2008, and LG was the first manufacturer to come up with a budget model. It appears that the company from South Korea has not done any harm, as witnessed by the claim from LG that it sold two million units in five months. 1.2 million of these were sold in Europe, while 600,000 units were sold in Asia and emerging markets such as Latin America.

Ultimately, LG wants to sell ten million Cookies worldwide, and to achieve this number, the manufacturer will make the device available in sixty countries, instead of the current forty. Whether this is sufficient to achieve the target remains to be seen, as more and more privateers arrive on the coast. Samsung, for example, is launching some cheap touchscreen models this year.
