LG delivers slightly fewer smartphones despite release V30 and Google Pixel 2 XL
LG has delivered slightly fewer smartphones in recent months than in the same period the year before. The manufacturer earned slightly more money on smartphones, because relatively more expensive models were sold through the release of the V30 and Google Pixel 2 XL.
LG reached 13.9 million smartphones in the last months of 2017, according to the quarterly figures. That is one percent less than in the same period in 2016, while turnover from the delivery of smartphones rose by three percent. The increased turnover per device is due to the release of two high-end models, in the form of the V30 and Pixel 2 XL, while in 2016 only the V20 was released during that period.
The quarterly figures come at a time when LG is changing its strategy around high-end smartphones. It wants to keep specific models in circulation longer, while releasing more variants of the G and V phones. It is still unknown when LG will present its next high-end smartphone. That happened in recent years at the telecom fair Mobile World Congress, which starts in Barcelona at the end of February.
LG has not yet released information about an event surrounding the fair in Barcelona, where competitors have done so. Samsung will present the Galaxy S9 there on Sunday, February 25, while Huawei will give a press conference on the same day, although the Chinese manufacturer does not say what it will show there. Sony has also sent out invitations for a press conference on Monday, February 26.
LG’s TV division is now doing a lot better. Turnover from TV deliveries rose by more than ten percent at the end of 2017 compared to 2016. This is mainly due to better sales of expensive TVs, the manufacturer reports. Presumably this often concerns models with an OLED screen. LG as a whole had a turnover of 16.96 trillion Korean won in the quarter, currently about 12.9 billion euros. The operating income was converted to approximately 277 million euros.
