Joled has raised 25.5 billion Japanese yen, converted about 204 million euros, to set up a production line for OLED panels. The mass production of the panels with a diagonal from 10″ to 32″ will start in 2020.

The new production line covers a floor area of 34,000 square meters. Everything should be ready for the start of production in 2020 and the capacity would then be 220,000 panels per month. According to Joled, the panels that roll out of the factory will be used in cars and in high-end monitors.

Joled uses an RGB printing technique for making the OLED panels and according to the company, the production line that is now being set up is the first where that technique is used for mass production. Joled was founded in 2015 and consists of the former OLED divisions of Sony and Panasonic. Other Japanese companies are also investing in Joled.

Making the panels by printing OLEDs should be cheaper than the conventional vapor deposition method. This year there is already a monitor with a printed panel from Joled: the Asus ProArt PQ22UC. That is a 21.6″ OLED monitor with a 4k resolution that costs 4999 euros. It is not yet clear to what extent the price will fall once mass production starts.
