Jedec to publish ddr5 memory standard in 2018

Standards organization Jedec announces that the final specifications for ddr5 will be published in 2018. The memory should double the bandwidth and density of ddr4. The new memory should also be easier to install.

The organization will disclose more technical details about ddr5 memory to industry partners at the Jedec Server Forum in June. The publication of the final ddr5 memory standard is due in 2018. The organization does not yet say at what time of the year that will be.

In addition to ddr5, Jedec is working under the name nvdimm-p on a standard for a new form of hybrid memory modules that combine dram and nand memory. This will be an extension of the current nvdimm-n standard. According to Jedec, the p variant is optimized for price, consumption and performance.

Micron already reported in August last year that work is being done on ddr5. The memory manufacturer said at the time that it wanted to make the first samples in 2018 and that the memory will go into production in 2019. A major switch from ddr4 to ddr5 would follow in 2020, according to Micron.
