Internet provider Rodin Broadband Groningen has been declared bankrupt. According to the company, this should not affect customers who purchase internet from the group. RBG is looking for a buyer of its internet network, so that the ‘Snel Internet Groningen’ project can continue.

In a statement on the site promises curator Jan Hein Mastenbroek that Rodin will continue in its current form ‘for the time being’ despite the bankruptcy. This means that the company will “fulfill its ongoing obligations”, including regarding deliveries and services, he promises. Mastenbroek says that RBG will ‘do everything it can’ to keep the internet network available to customers.

The curator writes that he is looking for a buyer for the RBG network who can continue the Snel Internet Groningen project. This is a project to install fiber optic and radio connections in the rural areas of Groningen. This concerns approximately thirteen thousand addresses. The province had made forty million euros available for this in 2017. The project was intended to be completed within two years. RBG halted the rollout in October last year, citing several setbacks as the cause. There would be disagreement with the province, among other things. The group then stated that more money and time would be needed to complete the project.

Against RTV Noord says Mastenbroek that the company currently has around 1,500 customers in the Groningen earthquake area. That region will be given priority in the construction of fiber optic connections, the company said in 2017. It is not clear whether there are other areas in addition to these 1,500 addresses where RBG has already started the project.

RBG states that it is ‘of the utmost importance’ that this process is given a chance, ‘because otherwise the damage would be enormous for all involved and the project would in any case no longer be feasible’. Mastenbroek wants ‘all involved’ to continue as if there is no bankruptcy for the time being. “Only in this way will there remain prospects for a fast internet network for rural areas.”
