Intel showed a die-shot of a server processor with 28 cores during its Technology and Manufacturing Day. This probably concerns a chip of the Skylake SP generation, of which models with 28 cores should appear as Xeon Platinum.

It’s not an official Skylake-SP announcement, but the die shot was shown in a presentation during Technology and Manufacturing Day in San Francisco, according to Computerbase. The image shows four rows of five cores and two rows of four cores. The cores would each have 1024KB L2 cache.

The middle die shot shows the new Xeon processor. The die shot to the left shows a Xeon Phi accelerator.

The Skylake SP generation server chips must appear as Xeon Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze and must be combined with the LGA 3647 socket. The Xeon Platinum is at the top of the ranking: these come with model numbers in the 8000 series and have 22 to 28 cores. The Xeon Gold chips have 14 to 22 cores and come with type numbers in the 6000 and 5000 series. The Silver processors are decacores and the Bronze chips get less than ten cores.

The full list of specifications previously appeared on the AnandTech forum but it is not known whether this table is correct.
